Because I Said So!

Often times when dealing with children we give them instructions but they arenít happy with or donít understand the reasons for the instructions. So they want an explanation. Sometimes they donít understand the reasoning behind the explanation or simply donít agree with the reasons. So, sometimes, a parent is reduced to this ultimatum. ďYou donít have to understand or agree, all you need to know is this: do it because I said so!Ē

Well, we are all children; no matter how old we are. And when our Father, God, tells us something it is nice if we can understand the reasons behind what He tells us, but it is not essential. It is not necessary for us to agree with Godís instructions. All that is necessary is to remember what we told our own kids. Because I said so! And then do what you should do because He said so. End of story! Now for a few examples.

1.      Clean and unclean foods. Whatís wrong with pork? A lot of people eat it and live long healthy lives.

2.      Sex. God created sex and made it pleasurable. Adultery, fornication, homosexuality.

3.      Prayer. Whatís the big deal? God knows what I think and feel and need.

*†† (1 Th 5:16-18 NIV)Be joyful always; {17} pray continually; {18} give thanks in all circumstances, for this is God's will for you in Christ Jesus.

4.      Church meetings.

*†† (Heb 10:25 NIV)Let us not give up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but let us encourage one another--and all the more as you see the Day approaching.

*†† (Lev 23:3 NIV)"'There are six days when you may work, but the seventh day is a Sabbath of rest, a day of sacred assembly. You are not to do any work; wherever you live, it is a Sabbath to the LORD.

5.      Occult.

*†† (Deu 18:10 NIV)Let no one be found among you who sacrifices his son or daughter in the fire, who practices divination or sorcery, interprets omens, engages in witchcraft,

*†† (Deu 13:1-3 KJV)If there arise among you a prophet, or a dreamer of dreams, and giveth thee a sign or a wonder, {2} And the sign or the wonder come to pass, whereof he spake unto thee, saying, Let us go after other gods, which thou hast not known, and let us serve them; {3} Thou shalt not hearken unto the words of that prophet, or that dreamer of dreams: for the LORD your God proveth you, to know whether ye love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul.

6.      Care for people. For example the Good Samaritan.

7.      Giving and generosity.

*†† (Mark 12:42-44 NIV)But a poor widow came and put in two very small copper coins, worth only a fraction of a penny. {43} Calling his disciples to him, Jesus said, "I tell you the truth, this poor widow has put more into the treasury than all the others. {44} They all gave out of their wealth; but she, out of her poverty, put in everything--all she had to live on."

8.      Forgiveness.

*†† (Mark 11:25 NIV)And when you stand praying, if you hold anything against anyone, forgive him, so that your Father in heaven may forgive you your sins."

9.      Loving an enemy.

*†† (Mat 5:44 NIV)But I tell you: Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you,

10.  Idolatry.

*†† (Col 3:5 NIV)Put to death, therefore, whatever belongs to your earthly nature: sexual immorality, impurity, lust, evil desires and greed, which is idolatry.

It is entirely reasonable for us to want to understand what we should do and to question why we are asked to do and not do certain things. But, when it comes to God, our understanding and agreement is a nice thing to have but it is not essential.

*†† (Prov 3:5 NIV)Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding;

*†† (Deu 32:3-4 NIV)I will proclaim the name of the LORD. Oh, praise the greatness of our God! {4} He is the Rock, his works are perfect, and all his ways are just. A faithful God who does no wrong, upright and just is he.

*†† (Prov 14:12 NIV)There is a way that seems right to a man, but in the end it leads to death.

You know that your Father in heaven loves you and wants only good for you. When you find yourself questioning God beyond reason listen carefully. You might hear that still voice in each of us that we call a conscience or perhaps the voice of God. It may be saying, ďBecause I told you so!Ē
