Blessed are the Pure in Heart

*†† (Mat 5:1-13 NIV)Now when he saw the crowds, he went up on a mountainside and sat down. His disciples came to him, {2} and he began to teach them, saying: {3} "Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. {4} Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted. {5} Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth. {6} Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled. {7} Blessed are the merciful, for they will be shown mercy. {8} Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God. {9} Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called sons of God. {10} Blessed are those who are persecuted because of righteousness, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. {11} "Blessed are you when people insult you, persecute you and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of me. {12} Rejoice and be glad, because great is your reward in heaven, for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you. {13} "You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled by men.

All of these blessings are blessings we can claim. But today I want to focus on a pure heart. The heart is often referred to as if it was the center of righteousness and evil and it often feels that way. It is common for us to refer to the heart. My heart is burdened, my heart is breaking, my heart rejoices, I love you with all of my heart, and so on and on it goes. He has an evil heart or a deceitful heart or is just plain heartless! Letís see some more verses about the heart.

*†† (Mat 12:34-35 NIV)You brood of vipers, how can you who are evil say anything good? For out of the overflow of the heart the mouth speaks. {35} The good man brings good things out of the good stored up in him, and the evil man brings evil things out of the evil stored up in him.

*†† (Mat 15:18-19 NIV)But the things that come out of the mouth come from the heart, and these make a man 'unclean.' {19} For out of the heart come evil thoughts, murder, adultery, sexual immorality, theft, false testimony, slander.

And so the heart is equated with both good and evil. Obviously, a pure heart has to be one or the other. A mixture is not, ďPure.Ē Righteousness is pretty much synonymous with purity and is what the Bride of Christ will wear.

*†† (Rev 19:7-8 NIV)Let us rejoice and be glad and give him glory! For the wedding of the Lamb has come, and his bride has made herself ready. {8} Fine linen, bright and clean, was given her to wear." (Fine linen stands for the righteous acts of the saints.)

The trick to purity is simple. Know what God expects and realize there can be no compromise with evil. Then walk, always, according to that knowledge. Trust in God and Trust in Jesus. Do not be afraid. Here is how Jesus put it.

*†† (John 14:1 NIV)"Do not let your hearts be troubled. Trust in God ; trust also in me.

*†† (John 14:27 NIV)Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.

But without a pure heart you should be afraid, very afraid. God knows the heart. You donít have to be perfect but you do need a pure heart. David was not perfect but he was a man after Godís own heart. (Acts 13:22) God know what kind of heart each of us has.

*†† (Acts 15:7-8 NIV)After much discussion, Peter got up and addressed them: "Brothers, you know that some time ago God made a choice among you that the Gentiles might hear from my lips the message of the gospel and believe. {8} God, who knows the heart, showed that he accepted them by giving the Holy Spirit to them, just as he did to us.

*†† (Heb 4:12 NIV)For the word of God is living and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart.

So let me connect purity with a few attributes of purity.

*†† (1 Pet 1:22 NIV)Now that you have purified yourselves by obeying the truth so that you have sincere love for your brothers, love one another deeply, from the heart.

In summary then we see purity comes from obedience to truth and manifests itself in love. That is sincere love and deep love from the heart. And how can you recognize that deep love? Here is how that judgment is made.

*†† (Mat 7:18-20 NIV)A good tree cannot bear bad fruit, and a bad tree cannot bear good fruit. {19} Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire. {20} Thus, by their fruit you will recognize them.

Here is a list of the fruit of love.

*†† (1 Cor 13 NIV)If I speak in the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I am only a resounding gong or a clanging cymbal. {2} If I have the gift of prophecy and can fathom all mysteries and all knowledge, and if I have a faith that can move mountains, but have not love, I am nothing. {3} If I give all I possess to the poor and surrender my body to the flames, but have not love, I gain nothing. {4} Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. {5} It is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. {6} Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. {7} It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. {8} Love never fails. But where there are prophecies, they will cease; where there are tongues, they will be stilled; where there is knowledge, it will pass away. {9} For we know in part and we prophesy in part, {10} but when perfection comes, the imperfect disappears. {11} When I was a child, I talked like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child. When I became a man, I put childish ways behind me. {12} Now we see but a poor reflection as in a mirror; then we shall see face to face. Now I know in part; then I shall know fully, even as I am fully known. {13} And now these three remain: faith, hope and love. But the greatest of these is love.

Here is something to consider.

*†† (John 6:46 NIV)No one has seen the Father except the one who is from God; only he has seen the Father.

*†† (Mat 5:8 NIV)Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God.
