I Am Sorry for Offending You, I need Your Help

Sorrow, true sorrow seems to be a rare commodity these days: At least if we judge from what we see from the pulpit and from our leadership. Preachers break down in tears when they have been caught in adultery. Politicians likewise are so sorry when they get caught in some illicit affair or a lie. Wouldnít it be better and more believable if they were sorry before they got caught. They are without excuse. The rules are simple.

(Exodus 20:2-17 NIV) The 10 Commandments

1.      "I am the LORD your God, who brought you out of Egypt, out of the land of slavery. {3} "You shall have no other gods before me.

2.      {4} "You shall not make for yourself an idol in the form of anything in heaven above or on the earth beneath or in the waters below. {5} You shall not bow down to them or worship them; for I, the LORD your God, am a jealous God, punishing the children for the sin of the fathers to the third and fourth generation of those who hate me, {6} but showing love to a thousand generations of those who love me and keep my commandments. {7}

3.      "You shall not misuse the name of the LORD your God, for the LORD will not hold anyone guiltless who misuses his name.

4.      {8} "Remember the Sabbath day by keeping it holy. {9} Six days you shall labor and do all your work, {10} but the seventh day is a Sabbath to the LORD your God. On it you shall not do any work, neither you, nor your son or daughter, nor your manservant or maidservant, nor your animals, nor the alien within your gates. {11} For in six days the LORD made the heavens and the earth, the sea, and all that is in them, but he rested on the seventh day. Therefore the LORD blessed the Sabbath day and made it holy.

5.      {12} "Honor your father and your mother, so that you may live long in the land the LORD your God is giving you.

6.      {13} "You shall not murder.

7.      {14} "You shall not commit adultery.

8.      {15} "You shall not steal.

9.      {16} "You shall not give false testimony against your neighbor.

10.  {17} "You shall not covet your neighbor's house. You shall not covet your neighbor's wife, or his manservant or maidservant, his ox or donkey, or anything that belongs to your neighbor."

New Testament Parallels

1.      (2 Pet 2:19 NIV)They promise them freedom, while they themselves are slaves of depravity--for a man is a slave to whatever has mastered him.

2.      (Col 3:5 NIV)Put to death, therefore, whatever belongs to your earthly nature: sexual immorality, impurity, lust, evil desires and greed, which is idolatry.

3.      (1 Cor 5:11 NIV)But now I am writing you that you must not associate with anyone who calls himself a brother but is sexually immoral or greedy, an idolater or a slanderer, a drunkard or a swindler. With such a man do not even eat.

4.      (Mark 2:27-28 NIV)Then he said to them, "The Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath. {28} So the Son of Man is Lord even of the Sabbath."

5.      (Mat 15:4-6 NIV)For God said, 'Honor your father and mother' and 'Anyone who curses his father or mother must be put to death.' {5} But you say that if a man says to his father or mother, 'Whatever help you might otherwise have received from me is a gift devoted to God,' {6} he is not to 'honor his father ' with it. Thus you nullify the word of God for the sake of your tradition.

6.      (1 John 3:15 NIV)Anyone who hates his brother is a murderer, and you know that no murderer has eternal life in him.

7.      (Mat 5:28 NIV)But I tell you that anyone who looks at a woman lustfully has already committed adultery with her in his heart.

8.      (Eph 4:28 NIV)He who has been stealing must steal no longer, but must work, doing something useful with his own hands, that he may have something to share with those in need.(Mal 3:8-10 NIV)"Will a man rob God? Yet you rob me. "But you ask, 'How do we rob you?' "In tithes and offerings. {9} You are under a curse--the whole nation of you--because you are robbing me.

9.      (Mat 5:37 NIV)Simply let your 'Yes' be 'Yes,' and your 'No,' 'No'; anything beyond this comes from the evil one.

10.  (Rom 7:8 NIV)But sin, seizing the opportunity afforded by the commandment, produced in me every kind of covetous desire. For apart from law, sin is dead.

Atonement

Ten simple rules not an entire book or a library of books, just ten simple rules. Even fairly young people can grasp the meaning and understand their implications. And yet no one has ever managed to obey all of them all of the time except for one man: Jesus, the Christ, the Son of God. He alone was without sin. And that turns out to be a very good thing for us sinners.

*†† (Rom 3:19-24 NIV)Now we know that whatever the law says, it says to those who are under the law, so that every mouth may be silenced and the whole world held accountable to God. {20} Therefore no one will be declared righteous in his sight by observing the law; rather, through the law we become conscious of sin. {21} But now a righteousness from God, apart from law, has been made known, to which the Law and the Prophets testify. {22} This righteousness from God comes through faith in Jesus Christ to all who believe. There is no difference, {23} for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, {24} and are justified freely by his grace through the redemption that came by Christ Jesus.

Justification, redemption, reconciliation, and atonement: That is what we who have sinned need and that is exactly what God has provided through His Son.

Unity and oneness with us and us with each other is what God wants and what we need. As sinners we donít deserve to be set free from the slavery we sold ourselves to.

*†† (Rom 6:23 NIV)For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.

But God is a God of love. In fact God, the Bible tells us, is love. It is not His desire that any should perish. Yet, incredibly, many will perish in the fires of hell because they are more in love with themselves and their sins that they are with God. And although God is a loving God He is also a God of Justice.

*†† (Heb 10:26-27 NIV)If we deliberately keep on sinning after we have received the knowledge of the truth, no sacrifice for sins is left, {27} but only a fearful expectation of judgment and of raging fire that will consume the enemies of God.

So unity with God is much to be desired. Atonement is our only escape from eternal death. Now letís look at some more scriptures.

*†† (1 John 2:1 RSV)My little children, I am writing this to you so that you may not sin; but if any one does sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous;

*†† (John 14:20 NIV)On that day you will realize that I am in my Father, and you are in me, and I am in you.

*†† (John 17:11 NIV)I will remain in the world no longer, but they are still in the world, and I am coming to you. Holy Father, protect them by the power of your name--the name you gave me--so that they may be one as we are one.

*†† (Rom 3:25 NIV)God presented him as a sacrifice of atonement, through faith in his blood. He did this to demonstrate his justice, because in his forbearance he had left the sins committed beforehand unpunished--

*†† (Heb 2:17 NIV)For this reason he had to be made like his brothers in every way, in order that he might become a merciful and faithful high priest in service to God, and that he might make atonement for the sins of the people.

How then can we acheive Atonement with God?

Accept Jesus as your Lord and High priest.

*†† (Acts 4:12 NIV)Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to men by which we must be saved."

*†† (Heb 4:15 NIV)For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who has been tempted in every way, just as we are--yet was without sin.

*†† (1 Tim 2:5 NIV)For there is one God and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus,

*†† (Acts 2:38 NIV)Peter replied, "Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.

*†† (John 15:9-14 NIV)"As the Father has loved me, so have I loved you. Now remain in my love. {10} If you obey my commands, you will remain in my love, just as I have obeyed my Father's commands and remain in his love. {11} I have told you this so that my joy may be in you and that your joy may be complete. {12} My command is this: Love each other as I have loved you. {13} Greater love has no one than this, that he lay down his life for his friends. {14} You are my friends if you do what I command.

The bottom line here is simple: Obey Him! Keep His commandments!
