I Want to Be Like Jesus

In today’s world if someone is asked who they most admire or who they would like to be like it is likely they would not name Jesus. Why is that? OK so he wasn’t terribly rich, as the world reckons rich. He was not terribly good-looking, as the world reckons good-looking. In his time he was not all that famous nor was he commonly thought of as royalty. To my knowledge he had no particular talent such as painting, poetry, music, or sportsman. There was nothing that would make teenage girls get all silly or teenage boys want to imitate Him. Yet some people loved Him deeply and others even feared Him. As the song says, “Jesus, there’s just something about that name.” Let’s look more closely at this man that changed the world!

*   He was strong yet gentle.

*   He was patient but capable of moving quickly when the situation called for swift action.

*   (Mat 11:28-29 NIV)  "Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. {29} Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.

*   (Mat 21:4-5 NIV)  This took place to fulfill what was spoken through the prophet: {5} "Say to the Daughter of Zion, 'See, your king comes to you, gentle and riding on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a donkey.'"

*   (Mat 21:12 NIV)  Jesus entered the temple area and drove out all who were buying and selling there. He overturned the tables of the money changers and the benches of those selling doves.

*   He had much to be proud of but remained humble.

*   (Mat 28:18 NIV)  Then Jesus came to them and said, "All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me.

*   He was compassionate but demanded justice.

*   (Luke 7:13 NIV)  When the Lord saw her, his heart went out to her and he said, "Don't cry.

*   He was obedient to His Father and gave all credit to Him.

*   (John 8:28-29 NIV)  So Jesus said, "When you have lifted up the Son of Man, then you will know that I am the one I claim to be and that I do nothing on my own but speak just what the Father has taught me. {29} The one who sent me is with me; he has not left me alone, for I always do what pleases him."

*   He lived a life full of temptation but never sinned.

*   (Heb 4:15 NIV)  For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who has been tempted in every way, just as we are--yet was without sin.

*   He was willing to sacrifice for the good of others.

*   (Mark 10:45 NIV)  For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many."

*   He could not be defeated but refused to fight back when attacked so He could redeem us..

*   (John 16:33 NIV)  "I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world."

*   He was a great teacher that could confound the most learned of scholars and still relate to the most common of men.

*   (1 Cor 1:27 NIV)  But God chose the foolish things of the world to shame the wise; God chose the weak things of the world to shame the strong.

*   He was a worker of miracles yet refused to be paid and never gloried in His power.

*   He was a man that knew what was important and what was not.

*   He was a man of healing, both body and spirit.

*   (Mat 14:14 NIV)  When Jesus landed and saw a large crowd, he had compassion on them and healed their sick.

*   He was a man of great love that hated evil.

*   (Rom 12:9 NIV)  Love must be sincere. Hate what is evil; cling to what is good.

*   He loved children, family, friends and even His enemies.

*   Those that truly knew Him paid homage to Him and were willing to lay down their lives for Him even as he laid down His life for them.

*   (Mat 2:1-3 NIV)  After Jesus was born in Bethlehem in Judea, during the time of King Herod, Magi from the east came to Jerusalem {2} and asked, "Where is the one who has been born king of the Jews? We saw his star in the east and have come to worship him." {3} When King Herod heard this he was disturbed, and all Jerusalem with him.

*   (Mat 2:11 NIV)  On coming to the house, they saw the child with his mother Mary, and they bowed down and worshiped him. Then they opened their treasures and presented him with gifts of gold and of incense and of myrrh.

*   He was a man unlike any before Him and unlike any after Him. He is King of kings and Lord of Lords.

*   (John 1:1-18 RSV)  In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. {2} He was in the beginning with God; {3} all things were made through him, and without him was not anything made that was made. {4} In him was life, and the life was the light of men. {5} The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it. {6} There was a man sent from God, whose name was John. {7} He came for testimony, to bear witness to the light, that all might believe through him. {8} He was not the light, but came to bear witness to the light. {9} The true light that enlightens every man was coming into the world. {10} He was in the world, and the world was made through him, yet the world knew him not. {11} He came to his own home, and his own people received him not. {12} But to all who received him, who believed in his name, he gave power to become children of God; {13} who were born, not of blood nor of the will of the flesh nor of the will of man, but of God. {14} And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, full of grace and truth; we have beheld his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father. {15} (John bore witness to him, and cried, "This was he of whom I said, 'He who comes after me ranks before me, for he was before me.'") {16} And from his fulness have we all received, grace upon grace. {17} For the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ. {18} No one has ever seen God; the only Son, who is in the bosom of the Father, he has made him known.

Here is the good news, the very good news, we can be like Jesus.

*   (1 John 3:2 RSV)  Beloved, we are God's children now; it does not yet appear what we shall be, but we know that when he appears we shall be like him, for we shall see him as he is.
