More Precious Than Gold

Gold or silver or rubies or other so-called precious things tend to be much desired. Thatís why they are called precious. Many of us believe we could use more of those precious things or at least the money to buy them.

But many things are more precious than gold and silver and we often fail to recognize their worth until we no longer have them. Many of those things are priceless, in both senses of the word.

  1. They are so cheap that frequently they cost nearly nothing. No price.
  2. They are so important to us that we would pay nearly any price to not lose them. Priceless.

Some of the things I am talking about are obvious, air, water and the love of family. Also, we can include health and freedom and the ability to say what we think and go where we want. There s a song that proclaims this simple truth, ďThe Best Things In Life Are FreeĒ as well as a movie by the same name. Here are the lyrics. Play video of Jo Crawford song

The moon belongs to everyone

The best things in life are free

The stars belong to everyone

They gleam there for you and me

The flowers in spring

The robins that sing

The sunbeams that shine

They're yours, they're mine

And love can come to everyone

The best things in life are free

The flowers in spring

The robins that sing

The sunbeams that shine

They're yours, they're mine

And love can come to everyone

The best things in life are free

The best things in life are free

Nice song and good lyrics. But so far we have not mentioned THE best thing in life. Itís free and itís more precious than gold or silver or anything else you can think of. Itís the gift of life through Jesus! What must you do to receive this FREE gift? Letís look in the book of Acts for some insight.

*†† (Acts 16:25-33 NIV)About midnight Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns to God, and the other prisoners were listening to them. {26} Suddenly there was such a violent earthquake that the foundations of the prison were shaken. At once all the prison doors flew open, and everybody's chains came loose. {27} The jailer woke up, and when he saw the prison doors open, he drew his sword and was about to kill himself because he thought the prisoners had escaped. {28} But Paul shouted, "Don't harm yourself! We are all here!" {29} The jailer called for lights, rushed in and fell trembling before Paul and Silas. {30} He then brought them out and asked, "Sirs, what must I do to be saved?" {31} They replied, "Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved--you and your household." {32} Then they spoke the word of the Lord to him and to all the others in his house. {33} At that hour of the night the jailer took them and washed their wounds; then immediately he and all his family were baptized.

To enjoy free things there are things you must do. Look at the Sun, Stars, and moon. Smell the flowers and the coffee. Listen to the wind and the music of the songbirds. Recognize the miracles that are all too often taken for granted. When you stop doing your part the best things in life are still free but so what? If you wonít recognize the blessings then they really arenít blessings to you anymore. Likewise you must continue your walk with the Lord. There is no turning back!

*†† (1 Tim 4:16 NIV)Watch your life and doctrine closely. Persevere in them, because if you do, you will save both yourself and your hearers.

*†† (Heb 10:36-39 NIV)You need to persevere so that when you have done the will of God, you will receive what he has promised. {37} For in just a very little while, "He who is coming will come and will not delay. {38} But my righteous one will live by faith. And if he shrinks back, I will not be pleased with him." {39} But we are not of those who shrink back and are destroyed, but of those who believe and are saved.

It really isnít as hard as people make it out to be, remember last weekís sermon and ďDo what youíre told.Ē Remember to talk with God. He really wants to hear from you. Read your Bible on a regular basis. Make your Father proud and do what your tod!

The best things in life are free. The very best thing in life is both free and more precious than gold.Itís yours for the taking. Get it!
