Women & Mothers

General Observations

1.      The man and the woman were both named Adam by God.

*   (Gen 5:2 KJV)  Male and female created he them; and blessed them, and called their name Adam, in the day when they were created. Adam means “Ruddy” perhaps because he was made from dirt.

2.       The woman was named Eve by her husband. Eve means “Life-giver.”

*   (Gen 3:20 KJV)  And Adam called his wife's name Eve; because she was the mother of all living.

3.      God’s people and the Church are symbolized as a woman.

*   (Isa 54:5 NIV)  For your Maker is your husband-- the LORD Almighty is his name-- the Holy One of Israel is your Redeemer; he is called the God of all the earth.

*   (2 Cor 11:2 NIV)  I am jealous for you with a godly jealousy. I promised you to one husband, to Christ, so that I might present you as a pure virgin to him.

*   (Eph 5:31-32 NIV)  "For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh." {32} This is a profound mystery--but I am talking about Christ and the church. Become one flesh might refer to their offspring.

4.      To be complete, the man needed the woman. That is why the two become one flesh.

*   (Gen 2:18 NIV)  The LORD God said, "It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper suitable for him."

*   (Gen 2:24 NIV)  For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and they will become one flesh.

5.      Men and women each have a role to play but that doesn’t make one superior to the other.

*   (Eph 5:21 NIV)  Submit to one another out of reverence for Christ.

*   (Gal 3:28 NIV)  There is neither Jew nor Greek, slave nor free, male nor female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus.

6.      Eve was deceived but Adam sinned willfully.

*   (2 Cor 11:3 NIV)  But I am afraid that just as Eve was deceived by the serpent's cunning, your minds may somehow be led astray from your sincere and pure devotion to Christ.

*   (Gen 3:12 NIV)  The man said, "The woman you put here with me--she gave me some fruit from the tree, and I ate it."

Women First

1.      First to sin.

2.      First to know the Son of God.

3.      First to see the Tomb of Jesus sealed.

4.      First to visit the Tomb.

5.      First to learn of His resurrection.

6.      First to see the Resurrected Christ.

7.      First evangelists.

8.      And in five of seven cases where Priscilla and Aquila (uh quilla) are mentioned, Priscilla is mentioned first.

Extraordinary Women and Their Roles

1.      Athaliah (Atha lyah), only woman to rule as king over Judah, for six years. She proved a woman can rule as poorly and be as evil as a man. (2 Chr 22:12 NIV)  He remained hidden with them at the temple of God for six years while Athaliah ruled the land.

2.      Phoebe, (Rom 16:1 RSV)  I commend to you our sister Phoebe, a deaconess of the church at Cenchreae (sin kree-ah),

3.      Miriam, (Exo 15:19-20 NIV) When Pharaoh's horses, chariots and horsemen went into the sea, the LORD brought the waters of the sea back over them, but the Israelites walked through the sea on dry ground. (20)  Then, Miriam the prophetess, Aaron's sister, took a tambourine in her hand, and all the women followed her, with tambourines and dancing.

4.      Deborah, (Judg 4:4-5 NIV)  Deborah, a prophetess, the wife of Lappidoth (Lap eedah), was leading Israel at that time. {5} She held court under the Palm of Deborah between Ramah (Rayma) and Bethel in the hill country of Ephraim (Ee freeam), and the Israelites came to her to have their disputes decided.

Deborah, (Judg 4:7-9 NIV)  I will lure Sisera (Sisserah), the commander of Jabin's (JayBen)army, with his chariots and his troops to the Kishon (ki shon)River and give him into your hands.'" {8} Barak (Bay rack) said to her, "If you go with me, I will go; but if you don't go with me, I won't go." {9} "Very well," Deborah said, "I will go with you. But because of the way you are going about this, the honor will not be yours, for the LORD will hand Sisera over to a woman." So Deborah went with Barak to Kedesh (Kee desh),

Ordinary Women have the Most Important Role – Motherhood

1.      Fathers are important but mothers have the most opportunity to help a child realize its potential.

2.      Mary, mother of Jesus, is mentioned before His birth and throughout His life. Joseph, His father, isn’t mentioned after the disappearance of Jesus when He was twelve.

3.      Mothers, generally, spend far more time than fathers with children.

4.      Mothers are “Hands on” people! They …

*   Fix the food

*   Prepare the clothing

*   Nurse

*   Wipe tears

*   Comfort

*   Establish values

*   Challenge

*   Instruct with words

*   Teach by example

*   Nurture

*   Protect

*   Assure

*   Praise

*   Correct

*   Offer hope

*   Shape our vision of what the world is about and our place in it

*   Serve as an example to which all other women are compared

5.      Even before we are born mothers are busy caring for us and protecting us by …

*   Watching what they eat and do

*   They may even talk and sing to us

No wonder when we see people on TV, spontaneously waving to their family at home, they nearly always say first, “Hi mom!”

Some Quotes

*   The commonest fallacy among women is that simply having children makes one a mother—which is as absurd as believing that having a piano, makes one a musician.  Sydney J. Harris (1917–1986)

*   No man is poor who has had a godly mother.

*   No gift to your mother can ever equal her gift to you—life. Abraham Lincoln (1809–1865)
