Right and Wrong

One of the many problems with the world today is a lack of knowledge. Sure we have all kinds of schools, computers, and the Internet. But for all that knowledge there is very little consensus as to what is right and what is wrong.

Right

In accordance with fact, reason, or truth; correct.

Wrong

Not in accordance with fact, reason, or truth; incorrect or erroneous.

There you go, what could be simpler? But for all its simplicity men cannot seem to agree on even simple matters. They canít agree on what is fact or fiction. They canít agree on what is reasonable or not reasonable. They canít agree on what is truth and what is false. The question of what is correct seems to never be easily determined. So what is the problem? Why should these things be so difficult?

It boils down, fundamentally, to who gets to decide. There are books about ethics, philosophy, law, and behavior. Generally these books seek truth and understanding. But that understanding and truth is typically based not on an objective standard but simply on what the author thinks or feels. Sometimes they end up with pretty good answers but frequently they do not! The problem is, the same as it was in the days of the Judges in ancient Israel.

*†† (Judg 21:25 KJV)In those days there was no king in Israel: every man did that which was right in his own eyes.

*†† (Prov 21:2 NIV)All a man's ways seem right to him, but the LORD weighs the heart.

But we have a King: Jesus is our King! And there in lies the problem. Men have become reluctant to accept the words of the King. Instead they go around trying to agree on what is right or wrong but they have no basis for their conclusions. They seek truth but deny the truth giver. In a prayer Jesus made this declaration:

*†† (John 17:17 NIV)Sanctify them by the truth; your word is truth.

We were founded by Christians, for Christians, on Christian principles. Those men didnít try to determine what was good or bad, what was right or wrong, on their own. They prayed and referred to the scriptures for guidance and justification as they struggled to create this nation. And that example brought us the blessings we enjoy today and are now losing. We are losing those blessings because we are walking away from God. We think we donít need God. God just seems to get in the way so they think. God, according to them, has no place in the public forum. Men, created in the image of God, now take a backseat to all sort of things: Finances and nature for example. It reminds me of this verse:

*†† (Rom 1:25 NIV)They exchanged the truth of God for a lie, and worshiped and served created things rather than the Creator--who is forever praised. Amen.

Whatís right and whatís wrong cannot be determined by philosophy or ethics classes or even a vote. The only way to determine what is right or what is wrong is by reference to the Word of God. Yes, even then we can have differences of opinion. But at least we know where the answer is!

And that is what is wrong with our nation today. Men have rejected God as the sole source of the knowledge right and wrong, the sole source of the knowledge of god and bad, the sole source of the knowledge of righteousness and evil. They have done just as the scriptures warn us.

*†† (Isa 5:20-21 NIV)Woe to those who call evil good and good evil, who put darkness for light and light for darkness, who put bitter for sweet and sweet for bitter. {21} Woe to those who are wise in their own eyes and clever in their own sight.

And it wasnít just before Christ that God warned us but after Christ as well.

*†† (2 Tim 4:1-3 NIV)In the presence of God and of Christ Jesus, who will judge the living and the dead, and in view of his appearing and his kingdom, I give you this charge: {2} Preach the Word; be prepared in season and out of season; correct, rebuke and encourage--with great patience and careful instruction. {3} For the time will come when men will not put up with sound doctrine. Instead, to suit their own desires, they will gather around them a great number of teachers to say what their itching ears want to hear.

At the founding of this great nation it was to God and His word that men turned to justify the laws they made and the way they lived. OK, so they werenít perfect but at least they turned to Him who is perfect. Today when someone turns to the word of God to address our problems and our ever-increasing number of invasive and unfair legislative rules they are likely to be mocked, ridiculed, seen as odd and out of the mainstream. Worst yet, they will be attacked and silenced as a religious crackpot. Standing up for right and wrong based on the word of God will likely get you branded as insensitive, uncaring, a bigot with some kind of a phobia. Is it any wonder we find ourselves as a nation going faster and faster down the road to losing our blessings.

It is always harder to fix a problem that to create a problem. But that doesnít mean the problem cannot be fixed.

*†† (2 Chr 7:14 NIV)if my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then will I hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and will heal their land.

*†† (Psa 81:13 NIV)"If my people would but listen to me, if Israel would follow my ways,

We need to return to the faith of our fathers. We need to quit accepting humanistic and relativistic ways and turn again to the absolutes that were declared by God in His word. We need to take this admonition to heart.

*†† (2 Tim 2:15-16 KJV)Study to show thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth. {16} But shun profane and vain babblings: for they will increase unto more ungodliness.

We need to stand up and not be shut up. The test of right and wrong, of good and bad, of righteousness and evil is not what men think but what God says. If there is to be a debate then let the debate be centered on finding truth as defined by God and acting accordingly! And then we can expect to see our blessings restored.

*†† (Prov 14:12 NIV)There is a way that seems right to a man, but in the end it leads to death.

Can we reclaim our country? Yes we can! Will we reclaim our country? I pray we will!
