Unequally Yoked

(2 Cor 6:14-18 KJV)  Be ye not unequally yoked (To join securely as if with a yoke; bind: partners who were yoked together for life. To force into heavy labor, bondage, or subjugation.) together with unbelievers: for what fellowship hath righteousness with unrighteousness? and what communion (Is held in common) hath light with darkness? {15} And what concord (Harmony or agreement of interests or feelings; accord.) hath Christ with Belial? (Worthlessness, as an epithet for satan) or what part hath he that believeth with an infidel? {16} And what agreement hath the temple of God with idols? for ye are the temple of the living God; as God hath said, I will dwell in them, and walk in them; and I will be their God, and they shall be my people. {17} Wherefore come out from among them, and be ye separate, saith the Lord, and touch not the unclean thing; and I will receive you, {18} And will be a Father unto you, and ye shall be my sons and daughters, saith the Lord Almighty.

Text Box:

I have an illustration here that might help you remember today’s sermon. Show slide of two eggs, “Unequally yolked” Seriously though, how and to whom or what we are, “Yoked” can be a serious matter. This verse is frequently tied to marriage but works as well with any relationship. We will consider marriage and then consider a few other relationships as well. But first, let’s look a little more at these verses and their context.

(2 Cor 6:14-18 NIV) Do not be yoked together with unbelievers. We start with a simple statement. No exceptions or conditions are attached. God plainly is saying, don’t. But in case we don’t get it. In case it is not clear enough to us. In case we like a child ask, “Why not” god gives us what should be a sufficient answer by asking us the following five questions

1.      For what do righteousness and wickedness have in common?

2.      Or what fellowship can light have with darkness?

3.      {15} What harmony is there between Christ and Belial ?

4.      What does a believer have in common with an unbeliever?

5.      {16} What agreement is there between the temple of God and idols?

Put another way it has been said that whenever Good and Bad compromise, bad wins! Whenever Right and Wrong compromise, wrong wins. Whenever a Christian compromises with Evil, evil wins.  Jesus said to love the Lord our God with all our heart and soul and mind. There is no room for compromise.

For we are the temple of the living God. As God has said: "I will live with them and walk among them, and I will be their God, and they will be my people." {17} "Therefore come out from them and be separate, says the Lord. Touch no unclean thing, and I will receive you." {18} "I will be a Father to you, and you will be my sons and daughters, says the Lord Almighty."

They say birds of a feather flock together. Take a look at your life and see whom you flock with. You might be surprised.

(1 Cor 5:6-7 RSV)  Your boasting is not good. Do you not know that a little leaven leavens the whole lump? {7} Cleanse out the old leaven that you may be a new lump, as you really are unleavened. For Christ, our paschal lamb, has been sacrificed.

The point here is to be aware that we tend to become like people we associate with. The more often and the more closely we associate with people the more likely we are to become like them And we know that a little bit of leaven will eventually leaven the entire batch.

We need to look not only at whom we are friends with but also whom we associate with. I think the ladies and their luncheon give a good example of this. You can read more about it in the November issue of the Heavenly Herald. But in essence they have settled on the Ethereal Café for their monthly meetings in part because it is a Christian establishment that is not ashamed to let the community know what they are.

(Rom 12:10 KJV)  Be kindly affectioned one to another with brotherly love; in honour preferring one another;

How about business associations? I think the same applies. You most likely have seen the sign of a business on Sixth street that frequently has a scripture on their sign rather than an advertisement saying how much better they are than everyone else. If I needed their services I would be inclined to check them out. You can find a lot of businesses that are happy to be identified as Christian. The Christian Journal is a good source for finding Christian businesses. Talking with your brothers and sisters in the Lord can be another good source.

I don’t mean to say we can’t deal with non-Christians; we obviously can and sometimes need to. If you are like me, unless I can save a great deal by buying online or through a catalog I prefer to buy locally. I feel the same way about buying from a Christian business. Unless they are incompetent or overly priced I prefer to use their services.

I would be remiss if I didn’t mention dating and marriage. Marriage is the most important contract a man and a woman people can enter. Dating might be compared to the shopping around we do before we enter into a marriage contract. If there is any truth in the examples I have already talked about then this example is the most important of all. Your entire future and the future of your children are in the balance. You need to choose well. The choosing begins with dating and culminates in marriage. If you are shopping for a car you can go to a dealer you know to be reputable or you can take your chances with a new dealer that doesn’t present well. You can look for something new or something used. You can be concerned about the appearance of a car or it mechanical integrity. You might want to look at the history of a particular model to get some idea what you might expect from the current version. You will want to get a car that suits you. You can use similar logic when you date and when you look for a mate.

I’ve heard that beauty is skin deep but ugly is to the bone. Keep that in mind when you are dating. Keep it in mind when you enter any relationship. God doesn’t look at our appearance as much as He looks at our heart. He wants to know what kind of person you are. We need to have that same godly mindset. We need to be equally yoked.
