What Must I Do?

There are many ideas about how we are saved and when we are saved. Or, put another what saves us.

  1. Is it grace? Grace doesnít save us; it allows us to be saved.
  2. The blood of Jesus? The blood doesnít save us; it allows us to be saved.
  3. His death? Doesnít save us; it allows us to be saved.
  4. His resurrection? Proves he was the Christ.
  5. Faith? Gives us assurance.
  6. Repentance? A necessary first step is to recognize our sins and resolve to turn from them.
  7. Baptism? An act of obedience and symbolic of our death and reborn state.
  8. Believe in the Lord? But belief without appropriate action is meaningless.
  9. Love God and Neighbor? Certainly, itís what is expected.
  10. Can salvation be lost? Not once it is fully realized. But it is not fully realized yet.
  11. Do I actually have to do something? Of course. You know you do!
  12. What about the free gift? Itís free but you have to walk the path, open the door and take it.
  13. Why do I need to be saved? You donít: But why wouldnít you.
  14. Do deeds or works count for anything? Of course they do. But with out grace and the sacrifice of Jesus works would not get you where you want to be!

*†† (Acts 2:46-47 NIV)Every day they continued to meet together in the temple courts. They broke bread in their homes and ate together with glad and sincere hearts, {47} praising God and enjoying the favor of all the people. And the Lord added to their number daily those who were being saved.

*†† (1 Cor 1:18 NIV)For the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God.

*†† (2 Cor 2:15 NIV)For we are to God the aroma of Christ among those who are being saved and those who are perishing.

*†† (Mat 10:22 NIV)All men will hate you because of me, but he who stands firm to the end will be saved.

*†† (Mark 13:13 NIV)All men will hate you because of me, but he who stands firm to the end will be saved.

*†† (2 Pet 2:20-21 NIV)If they have escaped the corruption of the world by knowing our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and are again entangled in it and overcome, they are worse off at the end than they were at the beginning. {21} It would have been better for them not to have known the way of righteousness, than to have known it and then to turn their backs on the sacred command that was passed on to them.

*†† (Mark 10:15-21 NIV)I tell you the truth, anyone who will not receive the kingdom of God like a little child will never enter it." {16} And he took the children in his arms, put his hands on them and blessed them. {17} As Jesus started on his way, a man ran up to him and fell on his knees before him. "Good teacher," he asked, "what must I do to inherit eternal life?" {18} "Why do you call me good?" Jesus answered. "No one is good--except God alone. {19} You know the commandments: 'Do not murder, do not commit adultery, do not steal, do not give false testimony, do not defraud, honor your father and mother.'" {20} "Teacher," he declared, "all these I have kept since I was a boy." {21} Jesus looked at him and loved him. "One thing you lack," he said. "Go, sell everything you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me."

*†† (Acts 2:36-38 NIV)"Therefore let all Israel be assured of this: God has made this Jesus, whom you crucified, both Lord and Christ." {37} When the people heard this, they were cut to the heart and said to Peter and the other apostles, "Brothers, what shall we do?" {38} Peter replied, "Repent and be baptized, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.

*†† (Luke 10:25-28 NIV)On one occasion an expert in the law stood up to test Jesus. "Teacher," he asked, "what must I do to inherit eternal life?" {26} "What is written in the Law?" he replied. "How do you read it?" {27} He answered: "'Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind' ; and, 'Love your neighbor as yourself.'" {28} "You have answered correctly," Jesus replied. "Do this and you will live."

*†† (Luke 18:18 NIV)Same as Mark 10:15-21

*†† (Acts 16:27-33 NIV)The jailer woke up, and when he saw the prison doors open, he drew his sword and was about to kill himself because he thought the prisoners had escaped. {28} But Paul shouted, "Don't harm yourself! We are all here!" {29} The jailer called for lights, rushed in and fell trembling before Paul and Silas. {30} He then brought them out and asked, "Sirs, what must I do to be saved?" {31} They replied, "Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved--you and your household." {32} Then they spoke the word of the Lord to him and to all the others in his house. {33} At that hour of the night the jailer took them and washed their wounds; then immediately he and all his family were baptized.

*†† (James 2:18-20 NIV)But someone will say, "You have faith; I have deeds." Show me your faith without deeds, and I will show you my faith by what I do. {19} You believe that there is one God. Good! Even the demons believe that--and shudder. {20} You foolish man, do you want evidence that faith without deeds is useless ?

*†† (2 Tim 4:7-8 NIV) I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. {8} Now there is in store for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will award to me on that day--and not only to me, but also to all who have longed for his appearing.

*†† (1 Tim 6:11-12 NIV)But you, man of God, flee from all this, and pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, endurance and gentleness. {12} Fight the good fight of the faith. Take hold of the eternal life to which you were called when you made your good confession in the presence of many witnesses.

*†† (Rom 6:23 NIV)For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.

*†† (1 John 3:4-11 NIV)Everyone who sins breaks the law; in fact, sin is lawlessness. {5} But you know that he appeared so that he might take away our sins. And in him is no sin. {6} No one who lives in him keeps on sinning. No one who continues to sin has either seen him or known him. {7} Dear children, do not let anyone lead you astray. He who does what is right is righteous, just as he is righteous. {8} He who does what is sinful is of the devil, because the devil has been sinning from the beginning. The reason the Son of God appeared was to destroy the devil's work. {9} No one who is born of God will continue to sin, because God's seed remains in him; he cannot go on sinning, because he has been born of God. {10} This is how we know who the children of God are and who the children of the devil are: Anyone who does not do what is right is not a child of God; nor is anyone who does not love his brother. {11} This is the message you heard from the beginning: We should love one another.

*†† (1 John 2:1-6 NIV)My dear children, I write this to you so that you will not sin. But if anybody does sin, we have one who speaks to the Father in our defense--Jesus Christ, the Righteous One. {2} He is the atoning sacrifice for our sins, and not only for ours but also for the sins of the whole world. {3} We know that we have come to know him if we obey his commands. {4} The man who says, "I know him," but does not do what he commands is a liar, and the truth is not in him. {5} But if anyone obeys his word, God's love is truly made complete in him. This is how we know we are in him: {6} Whoever claims to live in him must walk as Jesus did.

*†† (Rom 6:1-2 NIV)What shall we say, then? Shall we go on sinning so that grace may increase? {2} By no means! We died to sin; how can we live in it any longer?
