Why Isnít Truth Embraced?

Truth is extolled as a virtue by most people. We praise others and ourselves for cherishing truth and seeking truth. But the fact is clear that most people donít truly embrace truth nor do they particularly appreciate those who do. The Bible has a lot to say on the subject but letís look at just one example. Truth 224, true 117, false witness 7, liar 14, deceit 32, deceitful 26 and so on.

*†† (Rom 1:18-32 NIV)The wrath of God is being revealed from heaven against all the godlessness and wickedness of men who suppress the truth by their wickedness, {19} since what may be known about God is plain to them, because God has made it plain to them. {20} For since the creation of the world God's invisible qualities--his eternal power and divine nature--have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that men are without excuse. {21} For although they knew God, they neither glorified him as God nor gave thanks to him, but their thinking became futile and their foolish hearts were darkened. {22} Although they claimed to be wise, they became fools {23} and exchanged the glory of the immortal God for images made to look like mortal man and birds and animals and reptiles. {24} Therefore God gave them over in the sinful desires of their hearts to sexual impurity for the degrading of their bodies with one another. {25} They exchanged the truth of God for a lie, and worshiped and served created things rather than the Creator--who is forever praised. Amen. {26} Because of this, God gave them over to shameful lusts. Even their women exchanged natural relations for unnatural ones. {27} In the same way the men also abandoned natural relations with women and were inflamed with lust for one another. Men committed indecent acts with other men, and received in themselves the due penalty for their perversion. {28} Furthermore, since they did not think it worthwhile to retain the knowledge of God, he gave them over to a depraved mind, to do what ought not to be done. {29} They have become filled with every kind of wickedness, evil, greed and depravity. They are full of envy, murder, strife, deceit and malice. They are gossips, {30} slanderers, God-haters, insolent, arrogant and boastful; they invent ways of doing evil; they disobey their parents; {31} they are senseless, faithless, heartless, ruthless. {32} Although they know God's righteous decree that those who do such things deserve death, they not only continue to do these very things but also approve of those who practice them.

*†† (Rom 2:1-8 NIV)You, therefore, have no excuse, you who pass judgment on someone else, for at whatever point you judge the other, you are condemning yourself, because you who pass judgment do the same things. {2} Now we know that God's judgment against those who do such things is based on truth. {3} So when you, a mere man, pass judgment on them and yet do the same things, do you think you will escape God's judgment? {4} Or do you show contempt for the riches of his kindness, tolerance and patience, not realizing that God's kindness leads you toward repentance? {5} But because of your stubbornness and your unrepentant heart, you are storing up wrath against yourself for the day of God's wrath, when his righteous judgment will be revealed. {6} God "will give to each person according to what he has done." {7} To those who by persistence in doing good seek glory, honor and immortality, he will give eternal life. {8} But for those who are self-seeking and who reject the truth and follow evil, there will be wrath and anger.

Truth is like a bright light.

*†† (1 John 1:5 NIV)This is the message we have heard from him and declare to you: God is light; in him there is no darkness at all.

*†† (John 3:21 NIV)But whoever lives by the truth comes into the light, so that it may be seen plainly that what he has done has been done through God."

*†† (Isa 65:16 NIV)Whoever invokes a blessing in the land will do so by the God of truth; he who takes an oath in the land will swear by the God of truth. For the past troubles will be forgotten and hidden from my eyes.

Because truth exposes what people donít want exposed truth is not embraced.

*†† Our courts of law are supposedly about finding the truth but they routinely throw the truth away because of a technicality. Apparently they use the logic that two wrongs make a right!

*†† Things are routinely named in deceptive ways.

*†† One person is blamed for another personís failure.

*†† A political system that maximizes freedom is blamed for workers not achieving what they want and for not achieving their potential.

*†† Covetousness, envy, pride, ineptitude, laziness, poor choices and much more may be the truth behind a situation but few people are willing to look at the truth when they look in the mirror.

*†† Implicit collusion cause many people to agree to accept each otherís lies as truth.

Here is Jesus speaking to the Pharisees.

*†† (John 8:43-47 NIV)Why is my language not clear to you? Because you are unable to hear what I say. {44} You belong to your father, the devil, and you want to carry out your father's desire. He was a murderer from the beginning, not holding to the truth, for there is no truth in him. When he lies, he speaks his native language, for he is a liar and the father of lies. {45} Yet because I tell the truth, you do not believe me! {46} Can any of you prove me guilty of sin? If I am telling the truth, why don't you believe me? {47} He who belongs to God hears what God says. The reason you do not hear is that you do not belong to God."

Consider this: All the commandments involve truth and honesty. All the commandments are directly from God. I will conclude with this passage.

*†† (2 Cor 13:5-8 NIV)Examine yourselves to see whether you are in the faith; test yourselves. Do you not realize that Christ Jesus is in you--unless, of course, you fail the test? {6} And I trust that you will discover that we have not failed the test. {7} Now we pray to God that you will not do anything wrong. Not that people will see that we have stood the test but that you will do what is right even though we may seem to have failed. {8} For we cannot do anything against the truth, but only for the truth.
